| Microsoft versus Yahoo!... |
[Feb. 16th, 2008|03:45 pm] |
A lot has already been said and written on the 'Microsoft versus Yahoo!' war. Here is an interesting article about the potential takeover of Yahoo! by Microsoft being thwarted by the white knight News Corporation which may end up shortchanging Yahoo! shareholders. Textbook example of 'Wall street versus Silicon Valley'.

This week has been coldest for me ever, with temperatures dropping to -40 degree Celsius and -60 degree with the wind chill factored in here in the Prairies (city of Calgary). My coldest day before this was in Montreal about 2.5 years ago at -44 degree Celsius.

| Calgary phase 2 continues... |
[Jan. 24th, 2008|12:31 am] |
Phase 2 continues in Calgary: Started in December 2007 with a possible end date during the first week of February 2008. May have a possible phase 3. Shuttling across Canada. LP paperwork close to getting done (DM update was on January 21, 2008) at 7 months & counting. VP/JP/DP moved to their new townhouse (December 23, 2007). Co-ordinating & helping with the move was an interesting & fun experience. TSX has shed close to 9% in the first 3.5 weeks of 2008.

| In Calgary... |
[Oct. 30th, 2007|11:58 pm] |
Been in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for about 3 weeks and living out of a suitcase and dining in restaurants. Calgary is one nice beautiful city and the oil boom and oil riches are showing here. Just had the first snow of this season in Calgary about 2 nights ago.
Traveled a lot in the last 10 odd months between Bombay, Mangalore, Pune and Chennai in India to Toronto (GTA - Mississauga & Brampton) and Calgary in Canada.

| Chinook, the perfect player... |
[Jul. 22nd, 2007|12:06 am] |
Scientists at the University of Alberta (Canada) report that they've built an unbeatable checkers-playing computer. Their machine, Chinook, has solved checkers: It proves that if two players play perfectly, making no mistakes, the game of checkers will result in a draw.
The proof required analyzing 500 billion billion checkers positions -- 5 x 1020 -- a computational process that began in 1989 and has been running on hundreds of processors almost continuously since. Chinook now knows everything about checkers, the perfect response to any move, and the best that any human can do is drive Chinook to a draw. You can never win.
Read on here... Chinook, the unbeatable checkers-playing computer.
Play against Chinook here (knowing you can never win, ever).

| One of the greatest matches... |
[Mar. 25th, 2007|01:44 am] |
About a year ago, the greatest one-day cricket match of all time, was played in Johannesburg between Australia and South Africa. It is next to impossible to successfully chase a score of 434 in 50 overs, and that too against the indomitable Aussies, but South Africa did just that.
Do we see history repeating itself today? Yet another great match is underway between the true champions in modern cricket. Both these teams are light years ahead of their competition. True class.

| Win some, lose some... |
[Mar. 24th, 2007|06:58 pm] |
So ok, India lost to Sri Lanka in the crucial match and is (almost) out of the ICC World Cup. But what is with the Indian media and the Indian fans (the majority of them at least)?
Come on, cricket is just a game and keep it at that. Seems cricket is the center of their existence. The media going over the top, understandably so, because they will milk anything that is sensational. But the fans?
You win some, you lose some. Just accept it.
Meanwhile, the South Africa v/s Australia match should be an engrossing one.

| Herschelle Gibbs creates history... |
[Mar. 17th, 2007|11:55 pm] |
ICC World Cup 2007:
Had been watching the New Zealand vs England cricket match since the evening yesterday and what was with the New Zealand cricket team? Having just 210 runs to chase for victory, they were 3 down for 19 runs. Luckly, they managed to get back on track and claim an easy victory over England.
And in another world cup match, Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa) becomes the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over against the Netherlands in an international cricket match. Read about it here. This incident will fuel the debate whether the lesser ranked cricketing nations (minnows) be allowed to participate in world cup events.

| Hot Chennai... |
[Mar. 16th, 2007|11:45 pm] |
Have been in Chennai for about a month and still have to explore the city. This is very unlike me, considering any new city I visit, I invariably make it a point to roam around town and explore the neighbourhoods. The main reason why I am not up to it here in Chennai, is the weather. It is so very unbearably hot here, just going for a stroll outdoors is a task. However, might go exploring the city tomorrow with JY, if all goes as planned. Must say, Chennai is one nice and friendly city.
Got this funny forward: Recently launched into the "real world" and shocked by the expenses that came with it, my brother Dustin was complaining about the high cost of auto insurance. "If you got married," teased my dad, "the premium would be lower." Dustin smiled. "That would be like buying an airline just to get free peanuts."

| India... |
[Feb. 28th, 2007|11:50 pm] |
Been a while since my last visit to LJ land. And happy to note that LJ does not deactivate accounts for prolonged periods of inactivity - sweet.
In other developments, after Montreal, work took me to the cities of Hamilton & Oakville (Ontario, Canada) for a month and ever since I'm in India.
First in good old Bombay, then 2 trips to Mangalore, then Mahabaleshwar, then Pune and now Chennai. The Bombay-Pune expressway is just awesome. Boy, has India changed considerably in the last 3 years.
My time in Bombay was just too short and could not meet all my friends, whom I would have loved to catch up with, after so long a time. Thank goodness for the phone & thanks for those calls.

| Au Revoir Montreal... |
[Oct. 29th, 2006|10:56 pm] |
On October 20, 2006, I completed my longest consulting assignment ever, of 2.5 years in Montreal, to return to the city of Toronto, to return home. With my office on Yonge street (the longest street in the world) and overlooking the beautiful cityscape of Toronto, am looking forward to my days here now. One week in my new office and have already been to 2 cities - Oakville and Hamilton. (In 1964, Horton opened his first Tim Horton's Donut Shop in Hamilton, Ontario).
I will miss Montreal and all the fun times we had there, my friends, my colleagues, with LM and friends, evening walks, summer trips, French classes, bistros and diners, poutine, Tam-tams, Mount Royal, Sunday French church service, movies, CBC music concerts, rocker buddies, Paramount and AMC, Old Port, YD, MADD, parks, the Montreal diversity, LP, and last but not the least, my first client in Canada and some very special people whom I met in beautiful Montreal for the first time.
Au Revoir Montréal, till we meet again.

| Mount Royal's Tam-Tams... |
[Sep. 17th, 2006|10:45 pm] |
Considering that this may well be my last summer in Montreal, LM and me spent a better part of the Sunday, walking up Mount Royal to the Cross (the mountain in the center of Montreal, from which the city gets its name) and watched the Mount Royal's Tam-Tams - just awesome and a fun thing to do on a warm Sunday summer noon.
Watch a Mount Royal's Tam-Tams video.

| Movies... |
[Sep. 15th, 2006|11:26 pm] |
Have been watching one movie a week (mostly premiere shows) for the last few months now, mostly with LM. If not a movie then some live sporting event. Montreal is one great city, especially in the summer.
The latest movie, LM and me saw, was "Gridiron Gang", on Wednesday at Cinema Guzzo, Montreal. I get a lot of premiere tickets, but getting 8 tickets this time for the premiere of "Flyboys" really surprised me. Way to go!
Bon weekend.

| Another (funny) reason for speeding in Canada... |
[Sep. 7th, 2006|11:55 pm] |
Apparently it is OK to over-speed in Canada.
Why? 'Coz we have no goats on the road. This is hilarious.
